I have a daughter with end-stage liver disease with many complications who lives in Vegas. She is indigent, but lives with her ex, who is her only source of aid in transportation or any other support (except when I can help out). I want to help, but her long history of alcohol abuse and numerous other problems in dealing with life have left her with few options at this point. I cannot bring her to stay with me in AZ unless I want to end my 20-year marriage. She has no children.

I need to find out whether or not a medical social worker employed at a hospital when she's a patient can actually help her gain access to disability and/or other medical & financial help, without she herself having to physically go to the various offices to get these needs documented. I recently drove out to help her by bringing her home from UMC hospital in order to get started on her recovery and other needs to get the financial help she has put off for so long while drinking so heavily in the past. However, after 2 days she was never able to get up off the couch or even use her walker due to her current weakness from over a month & numerous transfusions, etc. in the hospital. At that point she asked me to leave because I wasn't strong enough to get her into a wheelchair, let alone a vehicle. Additionally she advised I was causing her stress by my own (apparently obvious) stress in dealing with her difficulties. She assured me her ex would be able to get her to any needed appointments in town, knowing he must work basically day-to-day casual labor. Within a day or so she called her sister in CA and described herself as isolated with nowhere to go. She has a long history of manipulative and self-destructive behavior. Also 2 attempted stays with me and her stepfather in '04 and '06 during which she incurred a DUI and later, a wasted $20K drug program in AZ. That's why I can't bring her to my home.

So far she has only a NV ID and a telephone appointment tomorrow afternoon with one of the aid agencies. I'm trying to get all the information I can before again attempting to drive out there only to find myself unable to do anything.

Many thanks to whomever may be reading this for listening to my dilemma. Anything I can learn about the best way to help my daughter is very much appreciated.

Hi, my name is Melissa. I am disabled, and we all know what that means..........no dental, no eye care, and on and on. I am on SSA disability, and medicare does NOT cover dental, and other things we all need.

I want to try to put into legislation, a complete volenteer project. This project would ask all people of our nation to donate one dollar out of every pay check to help the poor people of our country get dental, and medical help. This would apply to the donators themselves as well. Even if it is 50 cents, imagine the implecations.

I realize that we, as a country, are scared of our future. A plan like this would include everyone. And, with this fear of losing a job, even all that donate may benefit from this program. I would gladly donate one dollar of my SSA check.

Of course, I have no idea how to put this into action. Anyone got any ideas? And post some ideas............M

yet another cancer surprise

About yet another cancer surprise

Need financial help for dental work caused by radiation for cancer after effects.

My husband Daniel had head and neck cancer 11 years ago.  It was and still continues to be a life changing intrusion.  He lost half of his tongue, a huge amount of lymph glands (necessary for fighting infections) and they used his right pectoral muscle (chest) to rebuild his neck  and mouth.  We both survived his surgeries, massive radiation treatments, mood swings and severe psychological fallout as well as crawling out of the intense financial hole created by having cancer.  It took us the better part of ten years but we made it.  We are self employed cabinet makers and are experiencing the hardships of the current housing fiasco.

We thought we were slowly starting to see some better times ahead but over the last year (particularly the last six months), the enamel on Dan's teeth has worn away. He has maintained dental care meticulously since his treatment but his teeth are still eroding at an alarming rate. We have a very wonderful team of dental professionals working on his problems and we couldn't be more comfortable with them.

Dan thought he would just have his nubs of teeth pulled and get dentures. Not possible because his jaw received so much radiation that although it is healthy now, it would most likely not recover from any breaks or new holes. Necrosis of the jawbone! The only possible help for Dan's mouth is to have crowns put on all of his teeth at a cost of $1200 to $1600 each.  The estimate is for $26,000 to $31,000 dollars!

We are self employed and have no dental insurance. I am getting started on arranging a benefit in our community. I have  never done anything like this and can only hope I am somewhat successful. I am hoping  fervently that enough money can be raised to pay, not only for Dan's teeth but to also possibly start a fund for others who are in the same position. I realize that I will need more than one fundraiser but  here I am asking for help and contributions not only for my husband but also for other people now facing another after cancer bomb!
